Sweetgreen was founded by Nathaniel Ru, Jonathan Neman and Nicolas Jammet in August 2007. The three were classmates at Georgetown University. Sweetgreen had 40 locations as of February 2016. The salad chain is popular for many reasons, one of these being the fact that they use locally sourced materials.
They use fresh and organic ingredients and provide their customers with healthy food, which is what many millenials are now embracing. In short, the salad chain checks all the right boxes.
Technology has always been an integral part of Sweetgreen, and this is something every entrepreneur, regardless of the industry they are operating in, can learn from them. They have a website and mobile app which account for about a third of all their transactions.Their management strategies are also quite unique.
They have decentralized leadership to reduce the power-distance between employees. This strategy has worked very well for them. Just like any other startup, Nathaniel Ru and his fellow co-founders struggled with a few management issues in the beginning. For instance, they were used to doing everything themselves, but when the business started growing, they realized that they would have to delegate some of their responsibilities.
This was very difficult at first but it was necessary for the business to progress. They had to find a reliable and trustworthy team to work with, and that is how the business was able to expand and do so well.

Nathaniel Ru has always been passionate about entrepreneurship. He studied finance at Georgetown University, and while there, he also took an entrepreneurship course. What inspired him to start Sweetgreen was the realization that there were no healthy food bars that were also fun to visit and served delicious food.
That was when he joined hands with Jonanthan Neman and Nicolas Jammet and started the salad chain that has now grown to become one of the most popular eateries in various parts of the US.
Sweetlife, a music and food festival that attracts about 20,000 people annually, was also his idea to promote their brand and promote local food and music.
The success of Sweetgreen clearly did not come by chance. It took a lot of hard work and commitment from Nathaniel Ru, his two co-founders and the rest of the team at Sweetgreen. The three co-CEOs still have grand plans for the brand and with their passion and zeal, nothing can stop them.
